Greetings fellow Seniors and welcome to the Senior Corner. This article is to introduce all of you to SENIORS ORGANIZING SENIORS or S.O.S. for short. S.O.S. was founded by homeless seniors to advocate for the needs of homeless and formerly homeless seniors. We have been in existence since November of ‘05, and along the way we have obtained the support of various Senior groups, organizations, and certain people of stature in and about the Senior Circle of San Francisco. Also, we have received the support of District 6 Supervisor Chris Daly as well as Ms. Angela Alioto, who has been most supportive of our efforts to put forth an agenda that is conducive to our needs.
Of course affordable and suitable housing is at the top of our agenda. We have been instrumental in advocating for the rent deduction at the Raman Hotel (senior housing) and thanks largely in part to our Director Legislative Affairs, Melvin Beetle, we have recently introduced a proposal for all senior rent to be standardized to 30% of our income for the City and County of San Francisco. This proposal which we have titled PROPOSITION S IS SCHEDULED FOR THE NOVEMBER BALLOT. So seniors, we have got to put on our voting shoes and get ready for this election because this is our proposal and we have got to COME TOGETHER AND GET IT PASSED.
Aside from housing, we are also advocating for all issues concerning “senior safety” as well as organizing a campaign to protest DON’T-CARE PART D (our name for MediCare Part D) that has seniors in a bind as far as our survival is concerned. All and all, nobody really seems to understand just what our situation entails and the things we have to endure just to maintain ourselves. But thanks to people such as Jennifer Friedenbach of the Coalition on Homelessness, who made this article possible, we intend to make our situation and give it its proper attention. From here on we will utilize this opportunity to “help ourselves” and put forth an organization that will not only serve us socially but above all return us to a level of dignity and respect.
Last but not least, we are constantly advocating amongst our peers for SENIOR POWER. We must organize amongst ourselves and come together as one unit of people with one voice, complete with political power to be able to speak for ourselves, develop, and build for ourselves in this scheme of things. We now know what we are up against and that nobody is going to do what is necessary for our needs but us. We alone are our only hope for survival and it is time that we acted like it. So Seniors be ready, stay safe and think POWER. Until next time we remain your faithful servants of SENIOR STRUGGLE.
